The immune system normally helps protect the body from infections such as bacteria and viruses. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system does not work as it should and mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy tissues. This can cause inflammation (swelling) and damage to different parts of the body.

Autoimmune diseases can affect many organs and tissues, including the joints, skin, gut, nerves, or other organs. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

If you take part in this trial you’ll be helping medical research – you can help us develop a potential new treatment for the treatment of autoimmune and allergic diseases.

Current treatments for autoimmune and allergic diseases can be associated with side effects, such as reducing the body’s ability to fight infections. The study medicine is a type of medication called a ‘monoclonal antibody’. It has been designed to target and destroy the specific immune cells involved in causing disease, while aiming to leave normal, healthy immune cells unaffected. This targeted approach may help reduce symptoms of autoimmune and allergic diseases with a lower risk of unwanted side effects. The main purpose of the study is to learn how the study medication behaves in people with inflammatory skin diseases.

Delivery method

You’ll receive up to 4 doses of the study medicine by subcutaneous injections, over a 6-week period.

Schedule

During the 5 weeks before the trial, you’ll have a screening visit to check if you’re suitable.

If your screening took place more than 7 days before your first dose, you’ll also attend the unit for a quick blood test.

Then, you’ll stay on the ward for 1 or 2 nights, attend up to 9 outpatient visits and have up to 7 telephone calls, over 15 to 22 weeks depending on the amount of time between your visits.

You’ll have 2 skin biopsies before your first dose, 1 biopsy on Day 57, and two optional biopsies on Days 29 and 85.

You’ll receive £3,091 (without optional biopsies) or £3,341 (with optional biopsies).

Inclusion criteria

You must:

Have a diagnosis of mild to moderate psoriasis, with or without concurrent psoriatic arthritis, but be in general good health otherwise
be aged 18 to 65
have a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 40
be willing to washout of certain medications and using phototherapy during the study (we’ll discuss with your GP if it’s safe for you to do so)
if you’re a woman who can bear a child, be willing to use contraception.

Smokers and vapers allowed, but you can’t smoke or vape while on the ward.

Exclusion criteria

You must not:

have been exposed to more than 3 advanced therapies such as biologics, methotrexate or cyclosporine
have erythrodermic, pustular, predominantly guttate, or drug-induced psoriasis
have allergies to local anaesthetics, or any severe allergies to drugs, food or anything else
have had a vaccine in the 4 weeks before your first dose or planning to have one during the study
have recently had long periods of sunlight exposure or used tanning bed/booths
